Wear MP Fraser Kemp has called for tougher action to be taken against the thousands of uninsured drivers using North East roads.
His call came after he received details from the Home Office about how many prosecutions took place against uninsured drivers in the Northumbria Police Force area over the last 10 years.
Home Office minister Vernon Coaker revealed the following figures for proceedings taken in magistrates' courts against drivers uninsured against third party risks from 1997 to 2004:
1997: 12,470
1998: 11,837
1999: 13,296
2000: 13,195
2001: 12,504
2002: 12,309
2003:12,951
2004: 11,685
As from June 1, 2003, "driving a motor vehicle while uninsured against third party risks" became a fixed penalty offence.
Mr Kemp, MP for Houghton and Washington East, said: "An accident involving an uninsured driver is something that can happen to any of us and those people driving without insurance need to understand the seriousness of the offence and the impact it can have on the lives of others.
"These figures show the scale of the problem here in our region and that is why I shall be meeting with the minister to press the case for tougher action against offenders."
