Council leader suspended
A former miner has been suspended from his role as leader of the North East's biggest council.
Durham County Council leader Albert Nugent, from Westlea, Seaham, was one of five councillors suspended indefinitely by the national Labour Party in a row over women candidates in Easington.
The move opens the way for Coun Simon Henig, a Sunderland University lecturer from Chester-le-Street, to take over the leadership at a party meeting at County Hall today.
Coun Nugent slammed party chiefs, saying he had been "kicked in the teeth."
Also suspended were Easington district councillors Alice Naylor, from Murton; Rob Crute, from Blackhall; Audrey Laing, from Peterlee; and leader Alan Napier, from Murton.
