Light-heavyweight boxer Tony Jeffries, who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Games, will be joined at the celebration, by athlete Hazel Simpson, from New Herrington, and sonar sailor John Robertson, who will be taking part in the Paralympic Games next month.

Coun Smith, said: "The city is extremely proud of our local heroes, they have each achieved so much in their sport.

"The whole of Sunderland will be behind the Paralympians as they were supporting Tony Jeffries."

No date or location for the celebration has been confirmed but Sunderland Council say plans are under way to mark the city athletes' success.
