Sunderland's stroke services are to receive a share of £2.4million being given to the region over the next three years.
Health minister Ann Keen has announced that NHS North East will receive the cash to help the region's stroke services.

Ian Dalton, chief executive of the North East Strategic Health Authority, said: "The North East is already the best performing region in the country for providing specialist stroke services and dedicated rehabilitation units, but this will help us go that extra mile."

In Sunderland, a fast-track service is provided by City Hospitals Sunderland with urgent appointments and CT head scans for people of all ages.

As part of the cash injection, Sunderland will also receive an annual grant of about £100,000 to potentially fund a stroke care co-ordinator to help support stroke victims and their carers.

It would also help fund counselling and support services.
