CHRISTMAS has come early for would-be Boxing Day Dippers.
Hundreds of people brave the chilly waters off Seaburn each December 26, raising thousands of pounds for charity – and this year should be bigger and better than ever.
The numbers are usually limited to 1,000 but this month organisers Sunderland Lions Club have been given an early Christmas present.
"Entries are coming in well but, as we have been allowed an increase in the number of dippers, there are about 100 places left," said Lions spokeswoman Anne Fielding.
"Anyone else wishing to take part can telephone 522 5305 for a registration form."
Organisers are also hoping to see more people than ever lining the promenade and beach to cheer the dippers on.
"As this is promising to be one of the largest entries ever, we would like to think that there will be a large number of spectators to offer their encouragement so please come along to the beach on Boxing Day," said Anne.
The dippers leave the Seaburn Centre at 11am.
The Lions will also be busy next week, when their ever-popular Santa Sleigh takes to the streets next week.
Santa will be out and about in Ettrick Grove and then in Cleveland Road and Mount Road on Tuesday afternoon; in Sainsburys car park in Silksworth Lane from 3pm on Wednesday; Morrisons car park at Seaburn from the same time on Thursday, and from 5.30pm on Friday in Glenesk Road, Greetlands Road, Laurel Grove, Stannington Grove and Lutterworth Road.
Saturday from 5.30pm will find St Nick in Hipsburn Drive, Highside Drive, Seaforth Road and Thomas Hawksley Park before he enjoys Sunday off.
He will be in the car park of Morrisons at Doxford Park from 3pm on Monday, December 21, then Asda at Grangetown from the same time on the Tuesday.
