Newcastle Crown Court heard how the 18-year-old lashed out when he saw the officer arresting his brother for having a swiss army knife attached to a key-ring.

The single blow knocked PC Young unconscious, fracturing his nose and causing bruising and swelling to his face and head.

Wood, of Twickenham Road, Sunderland, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to the officer.

No action was taken against his brother for having the knife.

Judge David Hodson said police must be protected by the courts.

But the judge said he could suspend the prison sentence in Wood's case
thanks to a "moving letter" sent to him by the teenager's aunt, which was not read out in court.

Judge Hodson sentenced Wood to six months custody suspended for two years with supervision and a three month curfew between 10pm and 7am.
