A drunken attacker who lashed out at a group of strangers after the Sunderland Airshow has been jailed.

David Warrener fractured a man's jaw, punched a woman in the face, hit out at two men and even injured a two-year-old boy during his drunken rage after the popular event last summer.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 27-year-old hit out at a group
of people as crowds made their way back from the annual event along Roker Terrace.

Warrener, of Tadcaster Road, Thorney Close, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Telford and four charges of common assault.

Judge Guy Whitburn jailed him for three-and-a-half years.

The judge said the victims were entirely blamess people, going about their proper business.

The most serious attack was on Paul Telford, who was knocked to the ground by a punch to the face then repeatedly kicked in the head as he lay injured.

It was the force of the blow which knocked Mr Telford to the ground that caused a passing two-year-old boy to be pushed over.

Proscutor Paul Caulfield told the court: "As a result of Warrener knocking Paul Telford to the ground the two-year-old, who was walking with his mother, was knocked over and hit his arm on the ground, causing grazing to his right elbow as Warrener continued his assault on Mr Telford."

When Judith Dixon approached and pleaded with him to stop the attack, she too was assaulted.

Prosecutor Paul Caulfield told the court: "She pleaded with him to stop assaulting Mr Telford.

"Warrener responded by punching Miss Dixon in the mouth.

"The force of the punch was such it caused Miss Dixon to be knocked back against a wall."

Brothers Ian and David Holley were also punched in the face during the unprovoked incident, which came to an end when police manning the airshow event were told what was happening.

Mr Telford woke up in hospital with a fractured jaw which required surgery and bruising to his neck and shoulder.

The two-year-old boy had grazes on his elbow and was left very upset and unable to sleep.

The other victims suffered superficial injuries but were also left very shaken and upset.

Judge Whitburn told Warrener; "The only mitigation is your guilty plea."
