BIG-HEARTED parishioners have clubbed together to help a stricken holiday home for the disabled.
The Echo has reported that the Donna Claire Venture, in Seaburn, Sunderland, will close unless the charity can raise £100,000 by Christmas.
Now, members of St John’s Evangelical Church have joined the scores of Wearsiders hoping to save the charity.
The Shiney Row church has donated £500 from church funds, £500 from a coffee morning and a further £100 donated by a generous parishioner.
Raymond Barwick’s wife Irene, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, is one of the many to receive dedicated respite care at the centre.
The 61-year-old said: “We’re only a small church, but everyone has been really generous. One lady, who is 101, donated £100 of her own money.
“It’s a shame that it may close. Irene goes for eight weeks a year and loves it. ”
Families across the North East say that without the Donna Claire Venture they would have nowhere to take their disabled loved ones on holiday – and no one to turn to for much-needed respite care.
