A festive taste of the Continent has arrived in Sunderland with the launch of the city's Christmas market.
From mulled wine and hot chocolate to crepes and Bratwurst sausages, there are plenty of tasty treats to keep shoppers warm during the winter weather.
Sunderland's Mayor Coun Dennis Richardson and Mayoress Anne officially opened the market with a spin on the traditional Victorian carrousel.
Sunderland councillor Denis Wilson said: "Sunderland will be a truly magical place this Christmas, with the festive market and Victorian carousel, the ice rink in Mowbray Park and all the other exciting activities taking place throughout the city.
"This will bring more shoppers into Sunderland city centre and support local businesses."
The market is part of the Christmas Festival organised by Sunderland City Council.
Visitors to the city-centre attraction, in Market Square, will find plenty of treats to choose from.
Huge Bratwurst sausages cook over open coals, while steaming mugs of hot chocolate and mulled wine are served up, along with cakes, cookies and sweet treats from the German stalls.
Market manager Frank Smith said: "The Christmas markets are really popular in Europe and it's nice to bring a piece of the action to Sunderland.
"It's genuine German produce and it brings something special to the city centre.
"It's not just somewhere to pop in when you're shopping. People can meet here after work for a drink or something to eat."
Visitors to Market Square can try traditional treats at the festive food court until Sunday, January 3.
There will also be live music and entertainment on Thursdays from 5.30pm to 7pm and weekend afternoons between 2pm and 4pm.
