Fifty free places to take part in next year’s Run Sunderland Festival are up for grabs after event organisers signed up a new sponsor.

The organisers of the Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K have announced Totum Sport as an event partner for 2017.

The Sunderland-based sports nutrition company is starting a campaign to recruit 50 Wearside runners who will receive free places for either the half marathon or 10K, on Sunday May 7, as part of ‘Team Totum’.

Totum Sport is a natural electrolyte supplement that contains 78 minerals to sustain strength and hydration, reduce muscle cramps and injuries, and support faster recovery after exercise.

The company is aiming to sign up runners from throughout the city for either race and is encouraging participants of all abilities, from experienced club athletes to beginners.

As well as free places on one of the races, members of the team will be given Totum Sport to take throughout their training, and the company will follow the team to get weekly updates on their progress in the run up to the event.

Leeanne Hedley, operations manager at Totum Sport, said: “We previously sponsored the Kielder Marathon weekend which was a massive success so we are thrilled to be involved in the Sunderland event.

“Being a Sunderland-based company, it’s great for us to support local sporting events.

“We’ve decided to launch Team Totum at the Run Sunderland Festival as we are really passionate about our city, and we hope that lots of people across the North East sign up to be a part of our team.

Event founder and former world champion athlete Steve Cram added: “It’s great to have another local business as a partner, alongside Siglion.

“Team Totum is a brilliant initiative and supports the work that we are doing with Sunderland City Council and Active Sunderland to encourage more residents in the city to lace up their trainers and have a go at running, while also getting even more local club runners involved in these big events on their doorstep.”

The Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K are being organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Sunderland City Council and Active Sunderland.

For a second year, both races are being sponsored by Siglion, the development partnership which is carrying out major regeneration projects on the Vaux site and at other locations in the city.
