MUM Ursula Smith will be starting 2012 with a brand new smile.

Olivers Dental Studio, in East Herrington, offered the chance to win £10,000 of dentistry in the Echo’s Gift of a Smile Competition and after careful consideration, Ursula was chosen for the prize.

The mum-of-two, from Tunstall, has also won a £500 photo shoot with David Lawson Studios, in Chester Road, and a cut and colour at Reds Hair and Beauty, East Herrington, plus make-up and a course of 10 CACI non-surgical facelift treatments worth £750.

Ursula, 41, said: “My daughter encouraged me to enter because I’ve never really liked my teeth from being little. They cross at the front and I don’t like the colour – I remember I used to put Christmas cards between them to try and straighten them.

“As I’ve got older I’ve tried to improve myself as much as I can. I lost three stone 10 years ago when I joined a diet club and started at the gym and I’ve kept it off since. Then I saved up for three years and had my eyes lasered this year.

“I had looked around for teeth whitening treatments but I couldn’t afford it and then I saw the competition in the Echo and thought ‘Why not?’

“I asked my daughter what she thought and she said it was a good idea and helped me fill out the form to describe myself.”

Ursula works for Northern Rock Asset Management at Doxford Park and has been there for two years. Before that she worked at Littlewoods for 15 years.

She said: “I went in to Olivers for a consultation and Michael has suggested veneers for my front teeth and removing and replacing some of my fillings. He says they can definitely improve my smile and I’ll go in for my x-rays in January.

“When it’s all finished I think I’ll just feel really proud. A smile lifts a room, especially when you don’t know people. You smile and it breaks down the barriers straight away.”

Runner-up Pam Sansom has also won a whitening treatment at Olivers.
