An elderly couple inside a black Nissan Qashqai managed to free themselves after their car overturned at a busy crossroads in Seaham yesterday.
The accident happened just before 10.30am at the junction of Vane Terrace, Blandford Place, North Railway Street and Castlereagh Road, when the Nissan and a grey Citroen Xsara collided.
The family in the Citroen, a couple and their three children, a 14-week-old boy and two girls, escaped without suffering harm.
By the time emergency crews arrived, the elderly couple in the Nissan, both from Seaham, were out of their car and were being looked after in a house in Vane Terrace.
Both were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering from shock, with the woman also sustaining a cut to her head.
