Each December we go along to Cleadon Kennels, in Cleadon Lane, to meet homeless hounds who just want a family to call their own.

All the dogs have been found wandering around Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead by wardens and are no longer wanted by their previous owners.

Aimee Pemberton, kennel manager, said: “All the dogs have been with us for a while so are desperate for a home. They’re lovely dogs but people seem to only be interested in small fluffy dogs at the moment.”

Weekly viewing hours at the kennels are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 2pm to 4pm.

The kennel will close for Christmas on December 21 and will reopen on January 4.

Anyone interested in a dog can take them home for a £65 fee on a 28 day trial. They come with four weeks’ free pet insurance, free microchip, a neutering voucher and a first vaccination.
