Train passengers are suffering travel chaos today because of overhead wire problems in the North East.

Services between Newcastle and Edinburgh have been cancelled because of the problem, which is between Morpeth and Alnmouth.

The line between those two stations is blocked, and the disruption in the Newcastle-Edinburgh service is expected to last for the rest of the day, according to Virgin Trains.

Some services have been amended to start or terminate short of the affected area, while journey times between these stations will also be extended by at least 60 minutes.

Buses are running between Morpeth and Alnmouth.

The problem has had a knock-on effect, with other trains from Newcastle, particularly to London Kings Cross, suffering delays and, in some cases, cancellations.
