IF you only knew how big a difference your giving to the Echo Christmas Toy Appeal makes to countless lives.
Last Christmas Day a distraught mother would have had nothing to give her three children but for you.
She fled with her youngsters to a Wearside Women In Need refuge, after her husband, in a fit of rage, threw away the few toys she had.
“Because of the Echo Toy Appeal we were able to give the children toys. They had woken up with nothing because the father had argued with the mother on Christmas Eve and he had thrown the toys out,” says Linda Ohlson, project manager with WWIN.
With 18 women and 20 children in one refuge and scores more depending on your goodwill, Linda explained: “The toys people give really do make a massive difference to our women and they are really so grateful.”
This year the need is massive and as well as WWIN, your gifts will go to families on the breadline, struggling, single mothers and young men and women coming out of care with no families who are known to Social Services, We will also be helping needy youngsters known to two long-established Sunderland charities – the George Hudson Charity and Sunderland Orphanage Educational Foundation.
You can leave your gifts of new toys at collection points across the city. Mark your unwrapped gifts “boy” or “girl” and the age range they are for. We also need toiletries for men, gloves, socks, smellies and gifts for mothers. We also need tins and festive fare.
