A FLEDGLING Sunderland-based film company is set to put its work on the big stage after joining forces with a successful North East writing duo.
Contrapunto, a digital film company formed this year by graduates from the University of Sunderland, has been chosen by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood to shoot scenes which will be integrated into their new play Amazing Grace, which is touring the area later this year.
Amazing Grace is loosely based on the Grace Darling story and Contrapunto will be filming scenes at famous North East landmarks such as Longstone Lighthouse and Bamburgh Castle which will provide the backdrop to the play.
Ed Waugh, who’s also a graduate of the university, explained how the two teams joined forces.
He said: “We had been having discussions with the university about involving them in the production and Contrapunto’s name came up.
“When we checked out their previous work we were very impressed and from our first meeting it was clear that their technical abilities were matched by their drive and enthusiasm. It didn’t take us long to invite them on board.”
The seven-person team that makes up Contrapunto all met while studying film-making at the university and after realising that they were all passionate about working in the industry, set up the business through the university’s Creativitiworks scheme.
One of their first commissions was a book trailer for The Zombie Room, a thriller by North East author R D Ronald, which went on to win a Bronze Award at the Annual Telly Awards.
Producer Josh Coles, is delighted to be working on the project. He said: “We’re really excited about our involvement with Amazing Grace. As soon as we read the script we knew it was something we wanted to be a part of and we’re really looking forward to the challenge of integrating our film into the stage play.”
Jason Legget, principal lecturer digital media content at University of Sunderland, said: “When Ed and Trevor approached The Media School with their idea we knew that the Contrapunto team would be a perfect fit for the project.
“The partnership is really exciting and we all can’t wait to see the finished work on stage across the region.”
The three-week North East tour of Amazing Grace will begin with a world premiere at Alnwick Playhouse on Wednesday, October 17.
Venues also include Durham Gala Theatre on October 24 and October 25.
