Sunderland students’ music extravaganza

STUDENTS will be taking over three city centre bars for a day-long live music extravaganza.
Learners from the University of Sunderland and The Sage Gateshead’s music degree programmes will be showing off their skills at Sunderland’s Corner Rooms, Baby Indi and The Indigo Rooms, in High Street West, later this month.
During the afternoon there will be jazz and acoustic sets, with the pace picking up in the evening for rock, pop and blues.
The day of fresh talent on Saturday, November 17, has been organised by The Sage Gateshead, which works with the University of Sunderland, to deliver two music degrees at the iconic music venue.
For the first time, students from the BA (Hons) community music and the BMus (Hons) jazz, popular and commercial music degrees will come together to perform.
Paul Devlin, higher education and research manager at The Sage, said: “The opportunity to showcase the quality and diversity of musicians studying at The Sage Gateshead, right in the heart of Sunderland proved irresistible – a place with a fast-growing reputation for having an exciting new music scene.
“Music fans will find something to enjoy throughout the day – from bands already familiar to Sunderland audiences, solo, rock, acoustic and jazz performers as well as some new names and faces.”
Gig goers can hear rock and blues from local lad Adrian Woodland’s blues band, The Good Child, Aidan Watson’s rock band Red Letters and some British rock and blues from Barkin’ Billy and the Scrapyard Dogs.
There will also be solo slots from some of the students including Peter Tinkler and Carol Bradshaw. Craig Lynch, owner of all three bars, said: “It’s going to be fantastic to have these talented musicians from The Sage Gateshead perform at the three bars – with a mix of a continental style cafe bar, a dedicated sports bar and a champagne/cocktail lounge, there is the perfect setting for every genre that the musicians will bring.
“It’s a real coup for music lovers in Sunderland and we hope it continues with regular music events together with The Sage Gateshead.”
Adrian, a musician from Durham enrolled on the Community Music degree, said: “It’s been a few months since we played Sunderland so the Sage@Sunderland gig will be bags of fun.
“The whole band is delighted to be playing the event amongst some amazing musicians.”
The event is free and takes place from 2pm until late.
