SUNDERLAND’S very own superstar is through to the final eight contenders in his quest to be Jesus.

The city’s Ben Forster, 31, survived again last night to sing another day as millions tuned into the ITV1 show Superstar, following Andrew Lloyd Webber’s quest to find his leading man for the forthcoming national tour of hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

The Millfield singing sensation is proving popular with audiences and judges alike and his performance last night of Maroon 5’s song, This Love, proved a hit with judges.

Melanie C said he was fast becoming one of her favourites and fellow judge Dawn French said she loved his “remarkable musical theatre chops”.

Lord Webber himself said Ben, 31, had set the bar for the competition.

Also winning through to the next round was former East Durham man, 28-year-old Jon Moses, who last night sang James Morrison’s I Won’t Let You Go.

Both Ben and Easington-born Jon, who grew up in Peterlee and was a pupil at Shotton Hall School, will find out tonight if they have done enough to make it into the final seven.

The show’s contestants will continue to battle it out in live performances every night this week and into next week before the grand live final on Wednesday night where the audience’s choice of Jesus will be announced.
