TOGETHER their age adds up to more than 140 years – but that is not stopping two Wearsiders from taking to the pitch every week.

Bill McDearmid, 83, and Dave Fenwick, 65, are part of a group which has played football together for almost 40 years.

But feeling as fit as ever, neither of them have any plans to hang up their boots just yet.

Dave, from Thornhill, said they have played all over Sunderland, and now meet every week at Ashbrooke Cricket Club.

He said: “I was a bit of a late starter to the group.

“I’ve only been playing for 25 years.

“It’s really great that I am still playing, and I am very lucky to be as fit as I am.

“I also think it helps to encourage the younger guys to keep playing as well, when they see us at our age.

“Seeing Bill play gives me a real incentive to keep going.

“My dad died at 60, so every year I go over that is a blessing.”
