RUNNING clubs are being urged to get their names down and win big for next year’s Marathon of the North in Sunderland.

More than 1,000 people have already signed up for the event, on Sunday, May 6, when a weekend of athletics festivities will take place on Wearside.

A junior event and the second Sunderland City 10k will also be held on the same day.

The Club Challenge event will now incorporate the marathon, with teams competing to win a £500 investment for their club.

The competition requires each club to enter at least one athlete in the junior runs, in addition to four runners in the 10k, with at least one woman, and one runner in the Marathon of the North. The club that records the lowest cumulative time for all six runners will claim the title.

Kevin Carr, chairman of this year’s Club Challenge winners Sunderland Harriers, said: “The club was absolutely delighted to record a win in the inaugural Club Challenge event and we’re looking forward to taking part again next year with a number of runners due to line up in the Marathon of the North, along with the 10k and junior runs.

“It’s fantastic to have such a brilliant new event on our doorstep and with continued support from events like this I believe that club running in the North East can go from strength to strength.”

Geoff Wightman, managing director of Run Britain, said: “The new Marathon of the North is an excellent addition to the UK athletics scene that is clearly attracting a lot of interest. It is encouraging to see that the organising team has received a great response with entries flooding in.

“It is great to hear that clubs from across the North of England are responding positively to the new event which clearly has a strong focus to involve clubs and encourage the development of them and their athletes at all levels.”
