TWO quizmaster friends have tackled the toughest quiz show on TV.
Chris Brewis and Dave Taylor will appear on the new series of BBC Four’s Only Connect, to be broadcast on September 17.
The friends applied to take part in the show presented by Victoria Coren and after an audition in Edinburgh, they were invited to the studio in Cardiff to film an edition.
The pair were joined by Edinburgh pal Brian Pendreigh and found the whole experience challenging, but a lot of fun.
Journalist Chris, 55, from Offerton, said: “It was great. Everybody was very friendly. It was all great fun.”
Chris, who is secretary of the Echo Quiz League, the North East’s only general knowledge league, added: “It’s probably the hardest quiz on TV. You get four clues and have 45 seconds to work out the answer”.
Only Connect sees teams compete to find connections between apparently unlinked clues in a quiz that requires general knowledge, patience and lateral thinking.
Retired transport manager Dave, 61, from Barnes, said: “Victoria Coren was very funny, very straight forward and down to earth.
“It was very hard. Even when you hear the answers you think you could never have gotten that. It’s the quizzers’ quiz.
“It’s not just general knowledge, it’s making connections and using lateral thinking.”
Dave appeared in Countdown last year where he reached the quarter-finals and has recently been invited back for a special edition of the show.
Dave said: “I got a call from someone at Countdown and they said that I was one of the nicest contestants they had had on the show and they wanted me to go back on.”
Dave will go to film the show at the end of this month.
“The last time was great. I won eight out of eight before being knocked out,” said Dave.
The new series of Only Connect starts later this month.
