PUT your best foot forward for Niall’s Mile.
That’s the call from SAFC Foundation as it launches its annual series of community walks across the city.
The event comprises 10 one-mile walks led by designated walk leaders at various Sunderland locations throughout October.
This year’s event, the third of its kind, will be launched on Monday at the Stadium of Light.
Walkers are asked to pledge £1 to SAFC Foundation before walking and will receive a Niall’s Mile drawstring bag for participating.
Named after SAFC chairman Niall Quinn, the event has been organised by SAFC Foundation, the club’s charity, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary of delivering health, education, community and sport programmes across the North East.
After the success of last year’s event, which saw 4,500 people participating, this year’s Niall’s Mile will also feature a special Schools Day in which schoolchildren will be encouraged to raise money through walking a mile around their school.
The school which raises the most money will receive a visit from Sunderland AFC mascots Samson and Delilah.
Niall Quinn himself will be making an appearance at a walk to be confirmed, with other special guests also expected to take part.
Talking about the event, SAFC Foundation community fund-raising co-ordinator Dawn Day said: “We’re delighted to announce the return of Niall’s Mile for the third year in a row.
“It’s an event that’s accessible to everybody across the city and helps highlight not only how easy it is to exercise but the range of nice parks and public areas that Sunderland possesses.”
Niall added: “I’m proud to lend my name to an event that everyone in Sunderland can take part in and I hope that the great people of this area get behind the event.”
Niall’s Mile is produced in partnership with the South of Tyne Primary Care Trust, Sunderland City Council and the University of Sunderland.
