PLACES are still available for a dragon boat race in the city.
The event, on the River Wear on July 14, is the brainchild of Sunderland University student Lauren Dalglish-Smith.
She said: “We aim for it to be a community-led event, encouraging as many people as possible to be involved while celebrating the heritage of the river.”
Each team has 12 to 16 rowers and a drummer keeping the rhythm to follow.
Participants must be over 12 years of age and competent enough to swim 50 metres supported by a buoyancy aid. No previous rowing experience is necessary.
Professional events team Race the Dragon will provide the boats and insurance. There is an entry fee of £350 per team.
