Move along please, standing room only, room on top. Who remembers these words on the daily bus ride into work?

People caught the bus in all types of weather, rain or shine.

Who remembers the old Sunderland Corporation buses? Here's a couple from 1954.

For the majority, the bus was the only mode of transport affordable as owning a car was out of their reach.

People would catch the bus to work, to visit family and friends, to do the weekly shopping in town, and if you lived far enough away, the bus may have been used for travelling to and

from school. Did you use the school bus?

Take a close look at our archived photographs of buses plus the people who used to work on them.

We have the bus conductresses, or "clippies" in 1940, the engineers testing the bus in 1954, the 1971 training vehicle with four of the instructors.

And can you spot a relative on the bus drivers’ outing in July 1977?

Friendships were made at the bus stop, that in some cases that lasted a lifetime. Did you meet such a person at your local bus stop?
