Have your say

THRIVING yards, cranes towering high, ships everywhere you look.

This amazing video of the busy River Wear in the 1960s is in stark contrast to the quiet stretch of water we see today.

It features the tug Eppleton Hall – which now resides in California – steaming up Wear.

Whether you prefer the more scenic views of today or the industrial landscape of the past, the river was certainly a massive part of the city’s economy providing many men with work.

The footage was unearthed and uploaded to YouTube by Anthony Renton this week, dated as 1961.
