Travel back in time at the packed Sunderland History Fair

A history event packed with highlights is just days away.

More details of this year’s Sunderland History Fair have been revealed. It will be held at the Quayside Exchange, in High Street East, this Saturday from 10am to 4pm and is free to attend.

Fair co-ordinator Denise Lovell said: “We’re really excited about this year’s history fair. We’re in an historic venue, we have a fantastic mix of exhibitors, both old favourites and new faces, plus lots of other things to see and do throughout the day.”

Highlights include;

l Historic re-enactments by groups including the Time Bandits, Roma Antiqua, and Beamish.

l Free rides on a vintage double-decker bus courtesy of Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society. Donations are welcome.

l Illustrated talks, including;

11am - The day the German Navy came to destroy Sunderland by Alan Owen.

12pm - Sunderland’s Exchange Building: Architecture and Heritage by Michael Johnson.

1pm - Rain’s Eye Plan by Stuart Miller.

2pm - Codex Amiatinus: a short account of a big book by Richard Gameson.

3pm - Roma Antiqua.

The day’s fun will also include a guided walk around Sunderland’s Heritage Quarter and East End.

There will be Fred Gooch models on display including the Town Hall, Station, Victoria Hall, pubs and ships.

Malcolm Young will display replica vintage cycles, while glass artist Ayako Tani will show a historical and artistic project about glass ships in bottles.

Numerous organisations will be at the fair including Sunderland Maritime Heritage; City of Sunderland; Sunderland Antiquarian Society; Chester-le-Street Heritage Group; Hendon History Group; Houghton & District LHG; and Sunderland Museums Heritage.

Also there will be the Sunderland Volunteer Life Brigade; Friends of Sunderland Museums; Sunderland Soldiers and Badges; Sunderland Civic Society; Sunderland Theatre Organ Preservation Society; the 2214 Usworth Squadron Air Cadets; South Hylton LHS; Hylton Banner Group; SAFC; Save Our Ship of Light.
