SUNDERLAND manager Mr Bob Stokoe today revealed that he has asked Preston North End for permission to approach their trainer-coach. Arthur Cox, with a view to offering him the appointment of first team coach with Sunderland.

“I spoke to Preston manager Alan Ball today and I am waiting for a reply. I am hoping that he can obtain an immediate release so that he can come on the job straight away.

“When I first took over this job I said that I would like to appoint my own coach and this is what I am hoping to do.

“This will not make any change in the present staff. We will carry on as we are to the finish of the season and we’ll take a look at the position then.”
