Meet Sunderland’s world-class blues man

Award-winning blues guitarist Trevor Sewell

A MACKEM musician has been celebrated for flying the flag for British blues in the States.

Trevor Sewell made the trip from his home in Millfield to Hollywood, to pick up the Best Blues Artist award in the prestigious Artists in Music Awards.

The singer and guitarist is no stranger to awards – this was his eighth nomination across the pond.

Since the release of his self-penned debut album Calling Your Name, the musician has seen his popularity increase dramatically on both sides of the Atlantic.

In November 2011, he was a nominee in the 2012 British Blues Awards, and his album spent seven weeks at number 1 on the American Blues Scene Chart. Also that year, he was outright winner at the Hollywood Music In Media Awards.

Now he has returned from America with his latest gong under his arm.

He said: “It was an amazing experience and I was, of course, very pleased to accept the award. I made the trip with my bass player Brian Emerson and a lot of good things came as a result.

“In the four days we were there we managed to squeeze a lot in. We were invited to jam with some high-profile LA musicians in a venue on Hollywood Boulevard that once boasted Cary Grant and Clark Gable in their list of regulars.

“The awards happened the following evening at the Key Club in Sunset Boulevard where it was great fun to walk the red carpet.

“The following night we did our first American gig, which was also filmed for a forthcoming DVD and Live and Unplugged in Hollywood album.”

It seems that Hollywood may well be back on the agenda around November, as an American promoter, who was in the audience at the awards, is keen to set up some West Coast dates for the Trevor Sewell Band.

The Artists in Music Awards brochure called Trevor’s music: “Blues that is imaginative and soulful.

“A return to his roots has seen him widely recognised as one of the great emerging guitar talents currently riding the new wave of British Blues gaining popularity in the USA.”

Closer to home, the band is gearing up to play the Hebden Bridge Blues Festival, in Yorkshire, later this year.
