BAD weather has rained-off plans for an outdoor screening of Mamma Mia and fairground event tonight.
The events, along with other activities, were to be part of the first night of the Sunderland Festival at Herrington Country Park, coinciding with the arrival of the Olympic torch in the city tomorrow.
But Sunderland City Council said strong winds and continuing rain meant the events would no longer go ahead.
Councillor John Kelly, responsible for culture in Sunderland, said the decision had been taken in order to keep the grounds in a fit condition for the rest of the weekends events.
He said: “It’s disappointing news, but we hope everyone will understand why we had to take this difficult decision given the terrible weather conditions.
“There is still plenty to look forward to at Herrington Country Park over the weekend with the visit of the Olympic Torch and a range of other celebratory events still going ahead, including the final day of this year’s Sunderland Festival on Sunday.
“Our free programme of outdoor movies also continues, so there will plenty of other chance for everyone to enjoy the outdoor movie experience in our parks.”
