BIG-HEARTED fund-raisers braved the cold to plunge into the freezing sea for charity.

A group of 26 people took part in the icy North Sea dip at Roker beach to raise money for Children In Need.

The event was organised by Gillian Douthwaite, who roped in her family and friends for the brave feat, dressed in pyjamas and a range of fancy dress costumes.

The 38-year-old, of Shiney Row, said: “I just like to help. I’ve raised money for Children in Need for the past couple of years because when I see it on the TV it breaks my heart.

“We had an absolutely fantastic day, it was really brilliant.

“Although the water was freezing, we were splashing about for a while and some of us even went for a quick swim.

“It was an amazing day and we were raising money as well.”

Gillian does not have a total of how much has been raised yet, because the money is still to be collected.
