AUDIENCES will never forget this spectacle.

A model elephant, ridden by Prince Ali of Agrabah, stomped past the Sunderland Empire box office.

They were there in preparation for a production of Disney’s Aladdin which is being staged at the theatre tomorrow and Saturday.

In the musical, Prince Ali is the disguise Aladdin assumes to impress Princess Jasmine.

“We literally stopped traffic,” said show director Fiona Clegg. “She is called Nuala and she is one of only two full-sized elephant costumes in the entire country.

“If the reactions of the passers-by is anything to go by, she is going to prove quite a showstopper on stage.”

l Disney’s Aladdin will be staged at Sunderland Empire on Friday and Saturday with performances on both days at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets start from £12.50.
