THE Beamish Show of Agriculture started yesterday and finishes on Sunday.

Tomorrow’s contests will include eggs, photography, art and crafts and Sunday will feature beverages, baking and jams.

Linda Bramley, who works in Beamish’s costume department, suggests entrants in the craft sections should submit something unusual to get the judges’ attention.

She also advised applicants to keep an eye on both the front and the back of their work, as this is the first year that judges will be looking at both sides.

If you want to enter the Show of Agriculture, here are some top tips:

* Vegetables should be similar in size and colour, with no markings.

* Floral arrangements should be artistic and lively.

* For eggs, judges will look at the shape and colour of yolk, the consistency of the white, breakage of the shells and if the shells are similarly sized.

* Photographs should reflect the theme and contain an aspect of Beamish. They should be unique and eye-catching.

* Crafts should be well-made and unique.

* Judges will be considering the taste, smell and colour of drinks.

* For baking, judges will be looking at texture, taste, whether it is cooked properly and how it looks.

* Jams will be judged on flavour, colour and consistency.

The Festival of Agriculture is a whole season celebrating the agricultural and rural heritage of North East England, which runs until October 6.

Other events are:

* Hands on Heritage, September 21-22

* Harvest Festival, September 28-29

* Harvest Home, October 5-6
