HAVE you got what it takes to be Dave Stewart’s support act?
The rock star is looking for a singer songwriter to open his much-anticipated hometown gig at Sunderland Empire next month.
For the first time in his hugely successful career, the former Bede Grammar School pupil will play a larg- scale gig on home turf.
And he is looking for musicians to help make it a night to remember.
The winner will perform a 30-minute set prior to Dave taking to the stage, and will be treated to a mentoring session with the songwriter in person.
The singer, who shot to fame with the Eurythmics, has promised to keep in touch with the winner via email afterwards.
Dave, who grew up in Ettrick Grove, High Barnes, said: “I’m excited to play live in England again.
“It’s been a long time, and to kick off in my hometown the day my new album is released will be a golden moment for me.”
Speaking about why he chose the venue, he said: “I love the way the Sunderland Empire looks and feels inside.
“It has a very theatrical feel about it and my show is like that.
“I have so many songs to draw from like a magician pulls them out of a hat.”
The show will be a mixture of songs from his latest album, The Ringmaster General, as well as classic Dave Stewart and Eurythmics tracks.
Next month’s shows will be Dave’s first UK tour since 1996. It kicks off in Sunderland on September 3, the first time he will have played there on his own since the age of 16, and includes stops in Birmingham, Manchester and London.
Dave’s latest album is a mixture of rock, blues, country, rhythm & blues and psychedelia.
The competition is also looking for an act to support him on the other legs of the tour.
It is only open to solo singer/songwriters and all entries must be original material.
Competition entries can be submitted through davestewart.com for the individual dates.
