Steve Colman: Queen on stage, Kings of Wembley and the new crown prince of Newcastle?
Well I've been on and off by bike all week and Saturday will be the day for my big one 33 miles.
Only previous time I have thought about bikes coupled with the number 33 was when I played "Bicycle Race" by Queen on my 33rpm record player.
Well how times change. It was on my 5th birthday that I got my first bike and immediately fell off and I got back on with bleeding knee and off I went again. I hope it doesn't go the same way on my big day.
The big night this week was understandably Oasis at SOL which was then followed by We will Rock You at Sunderland Empire. I started the night before the show chatting with Ben Elton which you may have heard on Friday morning on Magic 1152.
He told me that he spent his 50th Birthday at La Guardia Airport NY finalising talks with some television moguls about a comedy detective series that he has written. I asked him to expand on that, but he was very guarded over it. I thought about quickly writing a TV series about a comedy detective, but had second thoughts – he's a clever lad.
I asked him about the worldwide success of We Will Rock You and whether it surprised him. He said that with the worldwide popularity of Queen's music it was not expected to happen but he felt pretty confident that it would and ,let's be honest, following Australia, Canada, Spain, Japan etc it's not a bad production to have on our doorstep.
I loved the over-the-top Brenda from X-Factor playing The Killer Queen. Sarah, who plays Scaramouche, has an incredible pedigree and with such a great voice you can understand why... What a night! You MUST see it before the end of it's run on the 27th.
I'm hoping to run a competition wherby if you give me your critique of the show we will take you to see it again... In London where we'll take you by train, put you up in a hotel and get to met the cast. Keep tuned to the Breakfast Show on Magic 1152.
Roon for improvement
England 6 Andorra 0 – Bit like playing Brighton and Hove Albion but I'll take it just to see Wayne Rooney in his rightful position up front as a striker, not as Sir Alex Ferguson has turned him into - a bulldog in midfield. He enjoys himself more, doesn't get involved in knocking the lights out of people after losing the ball and for goodness sake scores goals which is what it's surely all about? Actually Sir Alex, you carry on playing him there in the Premiership!
Irish eyes on Newcastle?
On that subject, well sort of! Where I live I can see helicopters coming and going at the heliport and was interested to see one on Thursday lunchtime which I'd never seen before. After searching on the internet I discovered it belongs to one of the richest men in Ireland who is involved in the meat industry supplying most of the beef to Europe's supermarkets. So what was he doing on Tyneside? Buying Newcastle United? Interestingly Friday morning there was an Irish chartered jet at Newcastle Airport. There'll be a few choice, or should that be 'prime cut', headlines to go with all the others of the past couple of years if that is the case. And both our North East clubs with Irish owners ? Begorrah!!! Or maybe it was just the Sunderland investors popping over to bring the money to sign Kaka and Ronaldo – aah no it wouldn't be - they've gone elsewhere
