Steve Colman: 'Hey Mickey, you're so fine...'
A few weeks ago Blood Brothers was filling the Theatre again with the memorable song "Just like Marilyn Monroe".
Coming to a Theatre near you soon is someone else with the initials MM. Yes a World famous star on stage at the Sunderland Empire – again – and I met him this week. Mickey Mouse is bringing his magic show and whatever your age I reckon it's something you'll enjoy. I love magic and was impressed with Mickey when he levitated me for a photo which you'll be seeing in the newspaper soon. It's amazing both how Mickey does the magic and the way that the room lights up when he's around, and how grown people react to him with one person who will remain nameless saying to him "I saw you in France".
For two weeks the brilliant reworking of West Side Story is on at The Theatre Royal, Newcastle. If you haven't got a ticket you won't get one! It's a sell out which I think is fantastic given the current financial problems. I know that many of the big West End Productions which are coming to Sunderland are also doing incredible business. I'm so glad that it's happening as if our theatres start losing audiences we won't get the huge productions which we have been getting recently.
Anyway - West Side Story – everyone knows the film and the moment Tony and Maria meet on stage and fall in love is beautifully done. There's also a bit of a ballet routine whilst Maria sings "Somewhere" offstage which is just brilliant and obviously "America" is an absolute belter. But I do have to say that the guy playing Tony is obviously a singer and not a dancer; think Todd Carty on "Dancing on Ice" and you'll get my drift.
It's been announced that Todd is going to be on the tour when it comes here – that's if he's not broken his neck practicing!
Car-Toon army?
Both the local football teams have been through a bit of turmoil this season for one reason or another. I'm just wondering what on earth could happen next. If you forecasted any of the things which have happened at the Toon the white coats would come and get you. Did you see the film "Goal" the vast majority of which was filmed at St James's Park? Well I've heard that there is a play currently being worked on which chronicles the Keegan/Ashley shenanigans. It will be premiered at The Live Theatre soon and depending on your colours, no doubt in the style of Shakespeare; it will be a tragedy or a comedy.
Whatever the weather...
Apparently there is light at the end of this weather tunnel. It wouldn't surprise me if we get our often usual dousing of snow in March, but it should warm up a bit next week. If you listen to my Breakfast show on Magic 1152 then you'll know we have Nigel our amateur weather forecaster who informs me of any big changes which are going to occur. Well ... where was Nigel when we had the fall on Thursday morning? I phoned him at 10 past 10 and asked where on Earth his warning was and I felt terrible when he croaked "I've been in bed ill for three days ... I'm sorry" Hmmm what sort of forecaster is that? Letting a bit of man flu get in the way!
