Steve Colman: 'Did you miss me?'
Hello I hope you enjoyed your break from me! I'm back. I hope all the Festive bits were good for you and you are back in the swing of things.
In the interim period obviously we have had a few problems locally and I trust that if you are out of work it's not going to be for too long.
I went to South Wales for the Christmas bit and instead of spending all the time driving I decided to fly to Cardiff, unbelievably there were 3 people on the flight. It was like having my own private aircraft with the Air Stewardess coming to the back of the plane to do the safety routine to us. I could get used to that however, I think it will be the first and last time it happens, but I'll remember it for some time. Incredibly, the Stewardess told us there was just one passenger on the flight back to Newcastle. Imagine that!
I used to go to the cinema a lot but stopped going regularly when I was living in Dubai as I would get sooooo angry with people talking to each other, and worse still, on their mobiles and not even trying to conceal the fact that they were. I lost count of the number of times I had to shout at the top of my voice something that I cannot tell you here. Also there haven't been that many films that I've really wanted to see. That changed recently due to what I felt was a feast of films being released. I was a bit worried that, because I get up at 4.45am I'd doze off in the epic that is "Australia". It's very very long 2 hours and 45 minutes. I survived. As it happens when I came out of that film, I went to grab a hot dog with the regulation lashings of jalepeno peppers and mustard and went straight into see "Tale Of Despereaux", the animated film. At only 90 minutes I should have done better but I did start snoring!! Last week I went to see "The Reader" which I thoroughly enjoyed however I didn't want Kate Winslet to get old in the film, but I suppose it happens to us all. I am going to see "Slumdog Millionaire" about the young lad who wins that amount on the TV show. Now I wish that would happen to all of us.
Something different at one of our Cinemas is live Opera. Cineworld at Boldon are doing regular live transmissions of productions from The Metropolitan Opera House New York. Now I'm not one to be desperately excited about Opera unless of course the leading lady is Russian beauty Anna Netrebko! And on February 7th it is!!!! Lucia di Lammermoor is on and if you want to see what I have got excited about get yourself there for a tenner. (Did you notice I didn't do the obvious there and call it a Tenor-Oh I just did!)
I'm hoping to chat with Wayne Sleep on the show next week. He's coming to see you at The Sunderland Empire in Cabaret which should be brilliant. I'm also hoping to chat with the lead lady doing the Liza Minnelli part who is Samantha Barks, the hugely popular runner-up from the hit tele series 'I'd Do Anything'. She just missed out to Jodie of course who, coincidently, I'm going to see in Oliver this weekend. I can't wait to see Rowan Atkinson as Fagin. He's perfect I think. But I wonder if, when he was first approached, he did have reservations. I know I would if someone thought I looked like a Fagin.………No comment please
