Our children have a right to protest

I WAS recently on the protest march at Sunderland Civic centre where parents and carers from Gillas Lane expressed their anger over the proposed closure.

I find it a complete joke that officers from the council thought it inapropriate to involve our children in the march. I have a six-year-old son who is very upset that the council want to close his school and he has his right to express his opinion aswell.

It's our children that matter in all of this and I still have no evidence from childrens services that they have our childrens interests as their priority.

We will continue our fight for the sake of our children's education.

Save Gillas Lane School!

MICK "The Bin" Prawn states that Ken Dodd should stop touring or at least leave Sunderland alone because his show is always the same.

eeing you know each show is the same you must go regular to watch him your good-self Mick and now after you going to watch Doddy all these years you have eventually decided that he is rubbish and should retire.

If you have been watching him for so long, you took your time to realise his show is always the same didn't you? Or are you just assuming it's always about diddymen etc., because Ken Dodd is the last of the music hall comics and is famed for his meticulous recording of every performance, cross-referencing the place he was performing and the jokes he has used so he doesn't repeat himself.

Now I'm off to book for August 30 at the Empire. Oh no! It's on a Sunday and I'm washing me hair.

BIRDS IN FULL FLOW

The birds in the garden

They fly on the stand

And search for the seeds

That are so abound.

There young un`s are chirping

And buzzing around

They make so much noise

A right terrible din,

They coming and going

All the day long.

From sunrise to sunset

It go`s on and on

It's a beautiful sight

To see them aglow

Is a wonderful sight

The birds in full flow.

Jumping for life

IN September my wife and I will, for the third time, be participating in an extraordinary and powerful event in the fight against breast cancer. It's called Jump For The Cause 2009, the Men's and Women's World Record Skydiving Event. See www.jumpforthecause.com.

We will be part of the British Team (see also www.britchicks.org for last years fundraising event in aid of the Red Cross where the British girls set a new British Formation Skydiving Record) and joining 125 other men & 180 other women from around the world to build the largest all male/ all-female freefall formation ever attempted and to raise money for awareness and early detection of breast cancer. Proceeds will benefit Breast Cancer research.

To take part we have to raise at least 3000 in pledges before then and we need your assistance to help raise awareness and funds! See also www.firstgiving.com/audreyrowe

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women, and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. Both the cause and cure remain undiscovered. That's why we are jumping so far. To do something big, something that would challenge us as much as breast cancer challenges millions of women around the world. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure by supporting us in our fundraising efforts.

It is a privilege to be part of this event and we are very proud to have been invited to participate. I hope you decide to participate with us

Mend potholes

AT the Leisure Centre, at the state of the city event, the "iconic" bridge was mentioned as if the 30million ornament on top was a done deal. It was said that the people of this city want it.

I talk to many people and no-one seems to want the fancy 30million structure. If a vote was taken I reckon about 70 per cent would say no, partly because of the waste of money at a time of recession and partly because they do not like the design.

Of course the council is a law unto itself and does not care what the residents of Sunderland would prefer, namely a standard bridge.

Also it was suggested that we need more shops. Have they not noticed all the closed-down shops?

What we need is potholes in the roads dealt with, plus a multi-storey hospital car park and the regeneration of the seafront.

The 30million would provide all of these.

Jobless exploited

I WANT to expose companies who exploit the unemployed. There are many people who are on New Deal in the area and go on to training courses and go to companies for extra work experience.

Although this may seem OK, it must be wrong for companies to continue to take people without any chance of a person getting a job at the end of it. I hope to gain support to expose such companies as they seem to be trading on free labour.
