A PUB has been certified as blooming marvellous.

The Red Lion, in West Boldon, has been awarded the Gold Certificate from Northumbria in Bloom for the second time in two years.

Pub director Russell Hall put its success down to bright colourful choices of flower.

The 28-year-old, from Whitburn, said: “I think it was the colours and variety of the flowers that did it.

“They send an independent adjudicator out in each season to see what they are like.”

“It’s just nice to win,” he added.

“We do receive a lot of compliments and cards from people saying that driving past the flowers brightens up their day.

“Owning a pub is not just about good service. It’s about giving a good first impression and having lovely flowers outside gets new customers coming in.”

The pub was presented with a certificate at the awards ceremony in Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

Russell said: “We don’t know who even nominated us, nobody has told us.

“We want to keep up the good standard. It would be such a shame to let it slide now.”
