A WAR on weight is under way in a bid to find Wearside’s Biggest Loser.

These super slimmers were selected from entries to an Echo competition, similar to the popular TV series.

Now, they have won themselves a free 12-week course at “The Fitness Camp” taking part in a series of boot camp-style training programmess.

The five competitors are up against a team who entered the competition through the Echo’s sister paper, the Shields Gazette.

As well as a winner from each group, there will also be an overall winner who will be crowned the Biggest Loser.

The person who loses the highest percentage of weight, based on start and end weights, will win a holiday for two worth £500.

Six weeks in, Amanda Querry, part of the Sunderland team, has already lost 10lbs.

Amanda, 40, from Millfield, said: “One of the important things is that we have been learning about eating habits.

“The first week was very hard. I’ve never done any real type of exercise for so long. After that, I was doing really well, although you can become a bit complacent but you have to remember that it’s not just the amount of weight you’ve lost, it’s also the inches.”

Paul Mort, the man behind The Fitness Camp, struggled with his own weight before becoming a personal trainer,.

He said: “I understand how difficult it can be to lose weight, because I’ve actually been there myself, so I enjoy helping others to change their lives and get slim again.”

The Biggest Loser will be crowned in a ceremony at Jarrow Civic Hall where they will receive their holiday prize, courtesy of the Hall’s new owner John Knowles from JK Clothing.
