Well done, GordonAFTER 13 years of incompetence from New Labour, I never thought I would be saying well done Gordon Brown.
But with the finances of Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Spain in a shambles and the Euro nearing collapse, even though Blair and Mandelson tried desperately to get us to join, Chancellor Brown stood firm and said "No".
So tonight I'll be raising a glass or two of Buckfast and toasting Jock Broon and the rest of the Westminster White Heather Club for keeping us out of the cesspit of the Eurozone.
So "lang mae ya lum reek Jock".

Fully supportingWITH reference to the story about "Garfield" in the Echo (Feb 5),
I am shocked to hear that the RSPCA would not help towards the cost of an operation to help this elderly cat.
I used to support the RSPCA but I will not be doing so in future. I believe Simply Cats is only a small place and as such it must have been hard for them to find the funds to help this cat. I will therefore be fully supporting Simply Cats and any other such small animal charities in future.
I called the RSPCA last year when I found a stray dog in need of help. They told me they could not help and suggested I ring the police, which I did and the dog was taken to my nearest police station.

Act of betrayalI DON'T think I am the only one who fails to understand the sympathy being shown by the BBC and so-called human rights groups towards a 31-year-old Ethiopian who had entered this country as a political refugee in 1995.
Binyam Mohamed left this safe haven of his own accord but was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 attempting to board an aircraft to the UK using a false passport.
The evidence is that he had attended terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan and MI5 is convinced he was then, and still is, a danger to this country.
As far as I am concerned what he engaged in was an act of betrayal against the UK. We gave him sanctuary but it counted for nothing.
What comes first – the human rights of an Islamic malcontent or the security and wellbeing of the nation?

They had 12 yearsMR Mullin blames the Tories for future power shortages. His party have had 12 years to renationalise these companies but has refused to do so. We have had the biggest increase in our power bills we have ever known.
Mr Mullin then blames the Tories for our banks going bust. Gordon Brown had 12 years to regulate the banks but refused to do so, saying on many occasions that the banks were doing a great job and should be left alone.
Mr Mullin has also said in one of his previous columns that the gap between the rich and poor had narrowed when in fact it is the widest for 65 years.
After 12 years of New Labour the North East still has the highest unemployment in the country, outside of London we have the highest child poverty and the highest adult poverty – an absolute disgrace and betrayal as we bring to Parliament more Labour MPs than other areas.
Mr Mullin should go now.

Empty rhetoricTHE Labour candidate standing in the Sunderland Central seat has at last surfaced.
A newspaper promoted by one Bob Price has been distributed in some areas of the constituency.
This paper headlines with "Standing up for Sunderland".
The lead article is full of glib lines such as "More jobs and real help for the people of Sunderland". Then there is "I will always stand up for Sunderland and fight for its people".
Fine words but I'm afraid all hollow. Turn to the back page and you see that this paper was printed in North Tyneside. What was wrong with the very good Sunderland-based printers and their employees?
Alas, all typical empty Labour rhetoric!
