WHO dunnit?
WEARSIDE is preparing for an invasion of the Daleks.
Doctor Who mania will take over Sunderland when a popular exhibition lands at Monkwearmouth Station Museum next week as part of its jam-packed bill of half-term activities.
The Daleks will be joined by the Tardis and the doctor’s occasional companion K-9 when the North East Meccano Society’s exhibition opens to the public.
The Meccano madness also includes carefully crafted models of London buses, Volkswagen Beetles and a variety of trains.
And fairground rides will be recreated using the cult building equipment by visiting enthusiasts.
Jo Cunningham, manager of Sunderland museums, said: “These models are amazing and so big. I think the adults will enjoy the day as much as the children.
“Big thanks to the North East Meccano Society for coming to spend the day at the museum and bringing their wonderful creations for us all to enjoy.”
As part of Thursday’s free family event, youngsters can get creative and try their hands at making moving models with popular construction toy KNEX.
The event forms part of the half-term programme of free events for families that the museum’s learning team is leading.
From Saturday to Thursday, the Station Backpacks event will see children borrow a backpack filled with fun art activities and trails to explore the museum.
On Tuesday, the museum will host a Musical Monkees Party, between noon and 2pm.
The Victorian train-themed party includes music, role play and dancing for under-eights.
The Meccano event takes place on Thursday between 1am and 3pm.
The sessions for youngsters take place between 11am and 12.30pm and 1pm and 3pm.
Families can also visit the new Wagon Shed, which opened in October.
It houses two immaculately restored railway wagons – a 1916 Goods Brake Van and a 1939 Covered Carriage Truck – a suspended miniature train set and a 1963 classic Rover P4 car.
Monkwearmouth Station Museum is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.
Entry is free.
