YOUNG footballers want their families and friends to turn ghost hunters to raise cash for new strips.

North East Sport has been desperately seeking sponsorship for its teams of budding players.

In a bid to raise funds, enterprising volunteer Donna Weiss has organised a night of ghost busting at historical Doxford House.

Spirit chasers 7Paranormal Team will be taking over the 18th-century mansion, along with their ghost-hunting equipment, from 9pm on Saturday, March 3.

Football coach Donna, 30, from Hylton Castle, said: “We have many teams which have entered into the Russell Foster League and are sharing equipment between us as the organisation grows.

“It has been difficult to find sponsorship for teams and for the organisation to allow us to put on more sessions. Also we need more equipment and kits for all the children of all ages that are in the leagues.

“After days of sending out many emails and networking, I decided to try and raise the funds myself as I don’t want to let the kids down.

“It’s important we provide these venues and opportunities for the children as it helps them grow, build self esteem, confidence, make new friends and also helps parents create new friendships.”

Donna thanked the owners of Doxford House for letting the not-for-profit organisation use the Grade II-listed building.

Director Peter Curtis added: “We are incredibly lucky to have volunteers as dedicated as Donna on our management team. Funding is tight for everyone at the minute, but Donna is working hard to make sure our kids don’t lose out.”

Tickets for the spooky get-together, which is over 18s only, are available from http://7paranormal.org/, priced £20. All proceeds go to North East Sport. For details, see www.northeastsport.co.uk.
