Restoration plan for Sunderland park
The Park Keepers cottage in Roker Park is inline for a rennovation project.
A FORMER Victorian park keeper’s cottage is set to become an education and community centre.
The well-known Park Keeper’s Lodge in Roker Park, which dates back to 1881, is now used as a hub for environment improvement projects throughout Sunderland. It is also used as a base for activities in the park.
But the Victorian building, which is leased by CEED (Community Environmental Educational Developments), is in need of renovation and updating work.
Sunderland City Council and CEED are about to launch a feasibility study into what can be done with the building – and they want to get park users’ views.
Dave Tully, CEED Project Officer, said: “The renovation work provides us with an opportunity to include facilities that would benefit park users, schools and other community groups, such as a classroom within the scheme.”
The feasibility study will be launched next week where Mr Tully will outline the project, and how people’s input can help determine the future use of the lodge.
CEED is looking to create a permanent headquarters for its work and develop a centre for use by schools education groups and the voluntary and community sector.
The council awarded the group £15,000 from its North Area Strategic Initiatives Budget to carry out a feasibility study to find out what services community groups would like to see delivered from the lodge.
Councillor Richard Bell, chairman of the council’s North Area Committee, said: “The building is a fantastic community asset and I would urge as many people as possible to share their views on the future use of the lodge.”
•The consultation launch starts at 7pm on Tuesday, January 24 in the Bowling Club Pavillion opposite the lodge. Light refreshments will be available.
