DEVOTED dads are proving a powerhouse of parenting.

Dads from across the area gathered with their families to celebrate the first anniversary of a special group.

Sunday Family Man sessions were launched a year ago after Sure Start staff took steps to develop a club especially for dads and male carers.

Now about 15 families attend the activities at Hill Rigg House in Peterlee every week.

To commemorate the first birthday, Sure Start joined forces with the Woodland Trust for a day packed with adventure.

The event, which follows on from other trips to the nature reserve, saw dads taking their children to a party in Castle Eden Dene where they took part in pond dipping and other fun activities.

Footage captured will be used to put together a DVD.

Chris Affleck, the Woodlands Trust’s visitwoods East Durham outreach officer, said: “It has been fantastic to work with the dads group they are a great bunch and you can tell they really enjoy getting involved in the activities just as much as the kids.

“During the summer holidays the group has been exploring the outdoors with woodland visits to Castle Eden Dene which have been a real success.

“There are so many exciting things to do in the woods and this group is a real inspiration to others showing how important it is to do things as a family.”

Debbie, a senior family worker with Durham County Council’s Sure Start said: “Sunday Family Man was developed to attract male adults who care for children aged from birth to five years old.

“The group has really bonded together with many of the dads making friends.

“We thought we would show our appreciation for their commitment by enabling them to take part in the case study and having a celebration event to honour their success.”

Anyone who would like to attend the Sunday Family Man sessions can call in to Rigg House, Lowhills Road in Peterlee each Sunday between 10am and 11.30am.
