The City of Sunderland

This selection of Echo pictures show Sunderland as it is today. It's changing, so this page will also be updated from time to time.

Ambit - The River Wear's controversial floating sculpture lit up under Wearmouth Bridge. Its changing ship-like formed a reminder of Sunderland's shipbuilding past. It left to visit other sites around the world

Wearmouth Bridge at sunset - The setting sun shows off Wearmouth Bridge, the main city centre link between the north and south sides of the river.

City view - The city centre tower-block flats and church spires dominate this unusual panorama of Sunderland looking north from Tunstall Hills

Civic area - The southern edge of the city centre with, from the bottom, the new Park Lane transport interchange, Sunderland Civic Centre, and Mowbray park

Sunderland Fish Quay - The new fish quay in Sunderland's East End, modernised to provide up-to-date facilities and which also now includes a restaurant.

National Glass Centre - The National Glass Centre, next to St Peter's on the north side of the river, mixes the best of contemporary glass art with exhibitions and displays on Sunderland's history of glass-making.

Roker Marina - The Marina complex which includes moorings and new housing, with Roker beach on the right, was built on the former North Docks

Monkwearmouth Station Museum - The imposing, classical facade of Monkwearmouth Station Museum, built in 1848 and now a museum of Edwardian exhibits and transport.

Ryhope Pumping Station Museum - The museum at the former waterworks, one of the region's major industrial monuments, where the steam-driven beam engines still steam up on Bank Holidays.

Stadium of Light - The home of Sunderland AFC, built on the riverside site of the former Wearmouth Colliery, and currently being extended.

Stadium of Light - Sunderland Football Club's Stadium of Light and the nearby Wearmouth Bridge, light up the night sky together.

St Peter's Church - The church in Monkwearmouth was a monastery, first built in 674 AD. The substantial remains were incorporated in the rebuilding of the existing church in medieval and Victorian time

The Bridges - The entrance to Sunderland's main shopping centre, viewed from Market Square. A recent extension has almost doubled it in size.

St Peter's Campus - The St Peter's campus of Sunderland University, which houses the Business School and is one of the city's most impressive new riverside buildings.

Wearmouth Bridge - The city centre bridge pictured from the east.- Ref.

Wylam Wharf - This riverside area in Sunderland's East End, has been restored after years of neglect. The project also included the former Exchange Building.
