I think if people do want to just get a few things, shops like this are easier.”

Sonya Gillespie, a doctor’s receptionist from Bickerton, said: “I tend to go to Tesco at Clifton Moor partly because I am familiar with the stock, so I like to go to a shop where I know where everything is.

“Although Morrisons in Wetherby is very good, one of the reasons I don’t go there is that everybody knows each other and stands around in the aisles talking.

“I don’t shop at Kwik Save, but I’m sure it is something that the locals use, just for the odds and ends they haven’t got.

“Some of the elderly residents do their shopping there, so I think it is quite important.”
