But which players will Phil Parkinson be looking at, and who could be available to the Black Cats during the winter transfer window? We’ve taken a look at some of the frontmen who could be interesting Sunderland ahead of the window – scroll down and click through the pages to see who Parkinson could be targeting in January:
1. Gary Madine
The former Sheffield United and Bolton striker - who worked under Parkinson at the latter - is out of favour at Cardiff City and could be open to a January move after appearing just three times this term. He'd certainly fit the bill and has plenty of experience at League One level - and higher. Photo: George Wood
2. Victor Anichebe
Now, this is admittedly unlikely to happen - given Anichebe is still to prove his fitness after a year and a half out of the game - but Sunderland may well take a look at their former frontman. Photo: Owen Humphreys
3. Mallik Wilks
Wilks would bring something that Sunderland's frontline is desperately lacking in - pace. Barnsley may not sanction a permanent exit given that the striker only joined them in the summer, but with his chances limited this term a temporary switch to League One may prove a good compromise. 4. Chris Martin
Having made only a handful of appearances for Derby this term, Martin's future looks uncertain. Sunderland have, of course, been interested in him in the past and a renewed bid may not be out of the question. Photo: Nathan Stirk
