We’ve delved into the data on WyScout to examine Posh’s preferred tactics, how Sunderland can stop them playing and – crucially – the key area Sunderland could exploit:
1. The shape Peterborough are likely to play
Posh are likely to start in a 3-1-4-2 shape, similar to that which the Black Cats have played in recent weeks. But in previous games, we've seen that Darren Ferguson's team can be extremely flexible... Photo: WyScout
2. A diamond in the middle?
Against Accrington on the opening day, when they were chasing the game having found themselves 2-0 down, Posh reverted to a midfield diamond in a bid to stamp their dominance on the centre of the park. One to watch for the Black Cats if they begin to boss the middle. Photo: WyScout
3. And yet another option
Posh have also played in a 4-2-3-1 this season, when they were pushing for a leveller against Fleetwood Town. It's a shape that worked, given they came from behind to win 2-1, and allowed their attacking talents to get on the ball. Photo: WyScout
4. So how do Sunderland stop their attacking talent?
Accrington managed to keep Posh at bay on the opening day of the season so it's interesting to see how they managed to restrict opportunities. Key was a deep defensive line - Accrington picked their moments to press and win back the ball in the final third, but most of their ball retention occurred in their own defensive third as they sat deep.
