Lynne Roberts was a fan of the hops from Vaux and said: “You could smell the brewery on certain days when you stepped off the bus in Park Lane. It was a lovely smell.”

The dining hall on the school ship

She wasn’t alone. Marie Wilkinson said: “Used to love the smell of the hops coming from Vaux, and seeing their horses delivering the beer and lager to the pubs.

“Used to like Binns also, buying some toys in there.
