As with the 8-1 win over Aston Villa u21s in the opening fixture, Parkinson will blend that youthful core with a handful of experienced players in need of minutes to boost their match fitness.
We take you through the XI we expect to see feature as the Black Cats look to build on a strong start...
1. GK - REMI MATTHEWS
Parkinson will surely give an opportunity to Remi Matthews, who he expects to push Lee Burge for a spot once fully up to speed and settled on Wearside. Photo: FRANK REID 2019
2. RWB - JACK DIAMOND
The youngster impressed in pre-season and excelled in the U23s opening two fixtures.
That will be rewarded with a deserved chance to impress against Carlisle United. Wing-back is not his natural position but allows him chances to drive at the opposition defence from deep, which he clearly relishes Photo: FRANK REID 2020
3. RCB - BRANDON TAYLOR
Parkinson had a slight concern after the Charlton game, with Jordan Willis experiencing some discomfort in his knee.
You'd expect him to take this opportunity to rest him, and that should mean another chance for Brandon Taylor.

4. CB - BAILEY WRIGHT
In an ideal world, this is the kind of fixture Bailey Wright would sit out.
But with McLaughlin, Flanagan and Xhemajli on international duty, it could be a case of needs must.
This is the position Morgan Feeney filled last time out with great success, and underlines why the hamstring injury he subsequently suffered is such a blow and will force Parkinson back into the market.
There are enough U23 options for Parkinson to rest Wright if he feels it necessary, but there is of course a ten-day break for the senior side after this game.
He could also, of course, switch formation for this game to play two centre-backs. Photo: Frank Reid
